3D Modeling
3D models, whether done by hand or in CAD, are useful tools to help determine final detailing and to communicate final design solutions.
The Bialetti Coffee Pot, project by Jonathan Ransom, Charlie McBride and Arran Evans, involved reverse engineering a Bialetti coffee pot and improving three parts. A CAD model of the existing design was firstly drawn up on solidwors. The improved parts were then designed, drawn up and added to the original pot. We decided to change the handle, as the original was too small and too close to the hot metal body; the lid, to stop steam escaping near the handle; and the knob, so that fingers wouldn't come too close to the hot lid when opening.
The Mulch Men character models were sculpted from air-drying clay and were used to determine their final size and shape before being professionally sculpted.
The camera model was made with a variety of different materials and processes. The main body was carved from wood, the lens and capture button were spun on a metal lathe and the top was cast with a liquid polymer.
The 1:5 scale model of the LCW chair by Charles Eames was made by laminating sheets of paper between wooden moulds.
The white sketch models were made from foam board and were used to determine the final details for the Nesting Table and Chairs.
